I Want More Rainbows

I want more rainbows.
I hosted a three-year old in the house for a few hours on Saturday. After some vigorous playtime, he needed to refuel and asked for some cereal.
Lucky Charms was the pick of the day. As he sat at the counter, carefully studying each spoonful, I watched the realization hit him – there were more plain oat pieces than the colorful, lusciously sweet marshmallows. He didn’t like it.
To make matter worse, it was the limited edition Lucky Charms with the jumbo rainbows so it really stuck out that the bigger, juicier rainbows are clearly a higher caliber than the crouton-like oat bits.
“I want more rainbows too, buddy.”
How do you explain to a three-year-old that the rainbows don’t taste as sweet without the oats mixed in? That little burst of sweetness is what makes it worth eating.
Life is the same. The rainbows don’t come without the rain. The sweet moments don’t exist without the ordinary (and even difficult) ones. We have highs and lows, good times and not-so-good times. But we can’t fully appreciate the sweet without having tasted the bland.
If you’re at the part in your bowl of cereal where you feel like all you’re getting are the oats, hang on. There’s a spoonful coming with a rainbow in it. And when it does, it’s gonna taste so sweet.
